Introduction

Mr. President and members of the Germantown Point Improvement Association, I have been invited to come down here to give a brief history of the early settlers and their activities here, together with photos to illustrate the building up of this beautiful and restful community. I have always had a warm feeling toward Germantown, as in my boyhood days soon after leaving school my father was engaged by Mr. Charles A. Hastings to build a large addition to his house and also to erect a stable in connection with the old Crane School house which Mr. Hastings had recently purchased and moved to his estate on Germantown Point.   We were at work here during the spring and summer of 1878, and I have never forgotten the feelings of restfulness and respect that I had for the Germantown at that time. Many times during the intervening years I have longed to possess a summer place here. But my dreams have never been fulfilled.

It is my purpose this evening to begin at Quincy Great Hill and show views along Weymouth Fore River and in the Town River and to finally give a brief description of the development of Germantown illustrated with photos which I have had the privilege of collecting during the past twenty five years.
