Germantown Shore

Along the easterly shore at Germantown (1915) Obed Allen of Provincetown, Soloman Davis Benjamin Davis, and John Knowles purchased the land along the slope from the present Edwards estate easterly to the cartway to the beach near the mansard roofed house shown at the right of the photo, which was erected here in 1882 by Mr. Warren of Quincy.

The two story house shown at the right of the center of the photo was built on the street opposite the end of Bicknell St. about the year 1900, when owned by Mrs. Catherine E. C. Saville it was moved to its present location.

Dr. Ebenezer Woodward purchased this estate and at his death bequeathed the property together with other parcels of land to the City of Quincy to create a fund for the establishment and maintenance of a classical school for Quincy born girls to be known as the Woodward Institute. This plan was carried out and the Institute was dedicated and has been continued since that date.

In 1871 the town of Quincy in consideration of 1700.00 conveyed this estate of 1 1/2 acres to Captain Kilborn W. Freeman who lived here for nearly twenty years.  In 1891 the heirs of Mr. Freeman convey his property to Mrs. Eva A.Clark of Boston. The estate was purchased by A.W. Finley who made extensive alterations and lived here until a few years ago.

William Edwards House, 1915

Mr. Edwards built the original part of this house in his estate on Greenleaf St. as a portable house and in 1907 set it up as a camp on the waterfront off St. Germain St. As time went on he added to the camp and in 1915 extensive alterations were made on the inside and the camp was finished off into a very comfortable and cozy summer place. On Feb 22, 1915 fire partially destroyed this camp but Mr. Edwards immediately repaired it. Mr. Edwards has resided here summers since 1907 and has beautified the grounds until it is one of the show places of Germantown. His father owned and occupied an estate on School St. in Quincy, and in the lawn at the front of the house he had a fountain the design of which was a cherub holding a serpent through which the water, supplied by a windmill from the brook at the rear of the house was discharged. Mr. William Edwards has placed this fountain on his lawn and fitted it with electric lights which give a beautiful effect.
