Sheer Pole and Oxen
In the early days of the granite industry of our city, the methods of handling the large blocks of granite was crude and must of necessity been a laborious undertaking. This photo shows a shear pole, the lifting power being supplied by oxen, which was increased by the use of double sheave blocks.
Ancient Boston Custom House
In 1834 the Granite Railway Company and others received the contract for furnishing the granite for the construction of the Boston Custom House.
Granite Railway Truck for teaming
The columns at the front were transported from Quincy on a specially designed truck. This truck was drawn by 54 yoke of oxen.
